Time has never been an issue for Baxter Jacobs, but then she never knew she had the ability to Bend it.

To acquire the power she needs to free him, she’ll become one of the Interred, those whose Magical abilities emerge as they come of age. When she does, she’ll discover that Declan isn’t the only one interested in the fact that she’s a Time Bender.

As the Interment arrives, Baxter knows this will be no Sweet Sixteen. A vengeful relative and the ruthless Council are determined to control her. Declan’s powerful and charming descendant, Jack Ashdown, claims he can save her. She’ll soon have to decide who she can trust, and how to master her new abilities before Time runs out.

THE AUTHOR

Marilyn Almodóvar is the author of a series of YA paranormal novels. Born in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, Lyn is a lover of words whose reading tastes range from Victorian novels to the books of Stephen King. Her favorite past-times have always been reading and writing, two activities that let her escape to other worlds.

It was this love that propelled her to choose Theater and French as majors in University, with a minor in English Victorian Literature. Lyn lived for almost a decade in England followed by three years in France before returning home to the States. A self-confessed citizen of the world, she is fluent in English, French and Spanish, with basic knowledge of the Italian language.

Lyn could happily exist breathing the clean air of Narnia, trapped in a cupboard under the stairs with Harry, fighting alongside Captain Jack Sparrow, doing an internship in Torchwood, or traveling around time and space with the Doctor…as long as she can have Mr. Spock, Captain Kirk and Captain Mal as companions.

Lyn currently lives in Central Florida with her French husband, English-born eldest son, and French-born youngest son. Her debut YA Novel, Interred, was published by Iambe Books on 01/22/2013. Fissure (Chronicles of the Interred #2) is scheduled for release on 06/22/2013.

MY REVIEW

I was touched to find my name mentioned in the Interred acknowledgements page. Lyn was one of the first bloggers to express enthusiasm for Spellbound back when it was a novella briefly published in an anthology titled Death by Chocolate. When the story turned into a novel and then series, she showed tremendous support. I’m excited to turn the tables and be a part of her debut release. 

I want to start out by expressing my cover love. Interred is hands down one of my favorite covers of 2013. (And lucky me signed up for a cover reveal.)

Interred is a tricky novel to classify. It’s YA, yes, and it involves magic, but I wouldn’t call it a story about witchcraft. Time manipulation is at play, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a tale of time travel, either. In some ways it reminded me of the NBC series HEROES, especially the part about absorbing abilities from other magical beings – stealing them in a sense. *shivers*

One thing’s for certain, Marilyn Almodóvar has mad writing skills. Her language is all kinds of fun. I picked out a couple of sentences that particularly stood out to me:

I help Mom put away the dry dishes in silence. For one, I don’t know if I can talk to her right now, and two, the vein in her forehead is about to give birth.

I need to think, to grasp everything that has been going on, and to push fear down my throat and into my stomach where it can camp until I’m taken away for Interment.

Baxter is a kick-ass heroine (and I love the name). She’s brave and sarcastic; kind to her younger siblings, mother, and even step-father; good to her friends; funny; and has some cool abilities that include bending time. I have to say I really like Baxter, her family, and friends.

Interred begins in picturesque Vermont during a snowstorm. The setup is eerie and you get the feeling that everything is about to change. Then it does when an estranged British relative, Fred, shows up at the front door and basically barges his way in.

Things go haywire during the Interment with certain parts reminding me of The Hunger Games with the fireballs exploding in the woods and other members of the Interment Ceremony turning on each other.  

  

Tragedy and betrayal befall Baxter in the end, but luckily there’s a silver lining in the form of the hunky, and also magically inclined, Jack Ashdown.
